On November 17th, Panglossian was Dictionary.com word of the day . It means; characterized by or given to extreme optimism, especially in the face of unrelieved hardship or adversity. As I read this definition my mind and heart simultaneously said; "this is a Christian word". Christian's are the only true Panglossian's.
Peter writes to the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia about living a panglossian life in 1 Peter 1:6-7 “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” And this assurance is guarantee by actions taken in verse 3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Christ resurrection provides us extreme optimism in the face of unrelieved hardship.
Our optimism in hardship springs forth from an assurance of the following “to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:4–5, ESV)
Let's us follow in our first century brethren's footsteps by living as panglossian's in this world.
